Scientists Astonished: Earth’s Inner Core Slowing Down Proven

Scientists have proven that the Earth’s inner core is rotating backwards relative to the planet’s surface, resulting in a slowdown. What does this mean for us? Let’s find out the details together…👇

Recent studies confirm that the Earth is gradually slowing down.

A study conducted by the University Park Campus and published in the journal Nature confirms that the Earth’s inner core has been slowing down relative to the planet’s surface since 2010. This is the first evidence of such a slowdown in decades.

The inner core, a solid iron-nickel sphere, is surrounded by a liquid outer core.

Since the core is located 4,828 km below the surface, direct observation is impossible. Therefore, researchers rely on seismic waves from earthquakes to study its movement.

The movement of the inner core has been debated for twenty years, with previous research suggesting it rotated faster than the Earth’s surface.

However, new data presented by John Vidale and his team, based on seismograms, indicate a slowdown.

Vidale and Wei Wang analyzed data from 121 seismic events between 1991 and 2023, using waveforms from repeating earthquakes.

This research found a slight difference between the two time periods.

The slowdown of the inner core could change the length of a day by fractions of a second, potentially altering the length of days over time.

The University Park Campus team aims to further investigate the core’s orbit to understand the reasons behind these changing dynamics. The study is also supported by the National Science Foundation and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
