Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Sons: Yes, it was a betrayal, but children exist for this reason.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s children have published the novel he requested to be burned before his death. Titled “See You in August,” the book will be released worldwide on March 12.

Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez passed away at the age of 87 on April 17, 2014.

Marquez, one of the most important figures of the “magical realism” movement, achieved sales of over 50 million copies worldwide with books such as “Love in the Time of Cholera” and “One Hundred Years of Solitude.”

Ten years ago, Marquez left behind a novel he wrote during his struggle with dementia. In his final days, Marquez told his sons that the novel needed to be destroyed.

However, his sons decided to “betray” their father by deciding to publish the book. The book “See You in August” was published in Spanish this week and will be available worldwide on March 12.

“See You in August” is a short novel of approximately 100–120 pages. It tells the story of an elderly woman named Ana Magdalena Bachorta, who visits her mother’s grave alone on a remote island every August. Despite having been happily married for over 20 years, she finds a new lover on each trip.

Gonzalo Garcia Barcha, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s son, made the following statements in response to the controversies in an interview with the BBC:

“We realized that the book was complete, and there was no need for extensive editing. There were no additions or major changes made.”

“We thought for about three seconds whether this was a betrayal of our family, our father’s wishes, and we decided this: yes, it was a betrayal, but children exist for this reason.”
