The Magician Who Voluntarily Buried Himself Alive

Joe Burrus, a magician in the 1990s, idolizing Houdini, attempted a different act. His plan of burying himself alive and then emerging from a secret compartment in the coffin tragically ended with cement breaking the coffin and collapsing onto the magician!

Taking you back to the 1990s, Joe Burrus embarked on his career as a magician with a singular goal: to become the epitome of Houdini.

Burrus, like many in the world of magic, sought to make a mark by attempting something radical: burying himself alive.

Being buried alive is perhaps one of the most feared scenarios for many people. However, Joe Burrus believed he could escape from his burial using his magical abilities.

While Houdini had performed a buried alive stunt in 1915, where he nearly suffocated and had to be rescued by his team, Joe Burrus wasn’t as fortunate.

Shortly after being buried alive, the heavy cement atop his coffin collapsed.

Joe’s assistant, Suzanne Brewer, remarked, “The cement already looked so heavy; I didn’t know how he would get out of there.”

The original plan was for Joe to secretly emerge from the coffin while the cement was being poured, giving the illusion of emerging after being buried.

According to medical personnel, the cement broke the coffin and began to engulf Joe. Despite efforts by his wife and child to rescue him, they were unable to reach him in time.
