An Incredible 800-Page Book Written 332 Years Ago That Describes All the Colors on Earth

In 1692, an artist known as A. Boogert wrote a book in Dutch. Boogert’s goal was to achieve all the colors on earth by mixing primary colors in every variation. The interesting thing is that when you open this book, you don’t just see colors because Boogert also explains in detail how he obtained each color. Such a project might sound easy, but when you see the book Boogert wrote, it leaves you in awe.

This 800-page book, handwritten and painted, is called “Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau.” According to book historian Erik Kwakkel, the purpose of this book was to educate people about colors. However, the ironic part is that there is only one copy of this book, and very few people had access to it. It can’t be compared to the Pantone Color Catalogue, first published in 1963, but no one can deny that this incredible book, which is currently located in France, was far ahead of its time.
