The Strangest Meals Requested by Death Row Inmates Before Execution

1. Pizza and Birthday Cake

David Leon Woods spent 22 years on death row before being executed on May 4, 2007, in Indiana. Woods, along with two friends, went to Juan Placencia’s home intending to steal his television. When Placencia answered the door, Woods began stabbing him. They stole the television and left the man to die. Twenty-two years later, Woods was asked what he wanted for his last meal. He chose to have pizza and birthday cake with his family. His last words were, “I want Juan’s family to know that I am truly sorry and I regret what I did.”

2. Turkey Sausage

Andrew Lackey killed an 80-year-old man because he believed the man’s house had a safe containing gold and cash. Lackey’s final meal request was turkey sausage.

3. A Long List…

In 1984, the state of Ohio executed Alton Coleman and his partner Debra Denise Brown for committing murders across six states. Coleman was charged with 13 separate assaults, including seven murders, and sexually assaulted at least 20 people. For his last meal, Coleman prepared a long list: well-done steak with mushrooms, fried chicken breast, salad with French dressing, pie, fries, collard greens, onion rings, cornbread, broccoli with melted cheese, biscuits, gravy, and cola.

4. Two Peanut Butter Cups and a Soft Drink

Christopher Eugene Brooks was executed on January 21, 2016, for raping and killing Jo Deann Campbell in 1992. Brooks made an unusual request for his last meal: two peanut butter cups and a soft drink.

5. The Entire Menu…

Serial killer John Wayne Gacy was executed by lethal injection in Illinois at the age of 52. The “killer clown” was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of 33 people. For his last meal, Gacy requested a feast: 12 fried shrimp, a bucket of crispy chicken, French fries, half a kilo of strawberries, pie, a hamburger, ice cream, steak, pizza, lobster, spaghetti, and sushi.

6. A Single Olive

In 1960, Victor Harry Feguer came to Dubuque from Michigan. He randomly called doctors and told the first one who answered that a woman needed help. When the doctor arrived, Feguer shot him in the head. After being caught, Feguer was sentenced to death. He was hanged on March 15, 1963, at the age of 28. When asked about his last meal, he requested a single olive.

7. A Cup of Coffee

Aileen Carol Wuornos, an American serial killer and prostitute living in Florida, killed seven men between 1989 and 1990. Wuornos claimed self-defense, saying the men had attacked her, but she was sentenced to death. Wuornos spent 10 years on death row and was executed by lethal injection on October 9, 2002. Her last request was a cup of coffee.

8. Pecan Pie

In 1981, Ricky Ray Rector killed a man in a restaurant and agreed to surrender to the police but then changed his mind and shot Officer Robert Martin in the back. After shooting himself in the head but surviving, he was sentenced to death by lethal injection. For his last meal, Rector requested steak, fried chicken, cherry-flavored drink, and pecan pie. On the day of his execution, he set the pecan pie aside, telling the guards he was saving it for later.

9. Another Long List…

Thomas J. Grasso was executed at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary on March 20, 1995, at the age of 32. His first victim was 87-year-old Hilda Johnson, whom he strangled with Christmas lights on December 24, 1990, for $12 and a television. Six months later, he killed 81-year-old Leslie Holtz and stole his Social Security check. Before his execution, Grasso requested a feast: two dozen mussels, two dozen clams, half a dozen ribs, a double cheeseburger, two strawberry milkshakes, half a pumpkin pie, strawberries, and a can of SpaghettiOs with meatballs.
