1. Air chairs

Philadelphia-based musical instrument maker John Cram invented a clever but cumbersome cooling device in the 1780s. He gained many customers in the process. George Washington even bought one and sent it to Mount Vernon. To use this device, people used their feet to operate the fan above their heads. Technically, it’s like operating a sewing machine. It is also said that Benjamin Franklin bought this device.

2. Sleeping verandas

In 1910, he had a ‘sleeping veranda’ built on the roof of the White House. This veranda was used to provide a cool place to sleep and access to fresh air in hot weather. There was also talk of the invention of a special sleeping veranda for children. These verandas could be used in city apartments, similar to today’s window air conditioning units, giving busy mothers time to do household chores.

3. Umbrellas

One of the things you’ll quickly notice when you look at photos of famous buildings before the invention of air conditioning is that there are umbrellas over almost every window. Since ancient times, umbrellas have played an important role in keeping the heat of the sun at bay. In the second half of the 19th century, new colors and patterns made canvas umbrellas not just a necessity, but an important decorative element of the home.

4. Dogtrot houses

Dogtrot log cabins were popular in Appalachia in the 19th century and provided a cool lounging area by separating the warm kitchen area from the sleeping area with a wind-drawn corridor.

5. Punkah (Ceiling fan)

Manually operated ceiling fans originate from India. In this system, thousands of poor seasonal workers pull a rope, moving the fabric back and forth in the room, allowing the rich to cool off. In the former South of America, young enslaved people also performed this task.

6. Ayran

Ayran, which is intertwined with Turkish culture, was a beverage consumed to cool off in previous periods of history. Even today, it was a drink consumed in Southeast Asia, especially in Türkiye.

7. Pressurized impeller and large ice chambers

In the 1880s and 1890s ventilation schemes were experimented using electric fans to bring in outside air and fill it with ice. Sometimes perfumed sponges were also placed inside these devices.

8. Casement windows

Today, most people keep their windows closed or open completely. However, people living in the Victorian Era used casement windows to cool the room.
