For years, Iran has been a key supplier of drones to Sudan, with the country steadily building up its capabilities from reconnaissance to attack. Among the Iranian-made drones deployed by Sudan is Ababil-3, a small and lightweight UAV capable of carrying a 45-kilogram warhead.
According to BBC news, significant evidence has been found that Iranian-made UAVs were used in conflicts in Sudan. It has been stated that especially the troops affiliated with the Sudanese government are using Iranian-made Mohajer-6 and Ababil-3 UAVs. It was stated that the wreckage of these UAVs was detected through satellite images and field observations. Additionally, satellite images of the flights of planes carrying weapons from Iran to Sudan also support these claims.
Early last December, a Boeing 747 aircraft belonging to Iranian air cargo carrier Qeshm Fars Air was spotted at Port Sudan Airport in eastern Sudan after taking off from Bandar Abbas airport in Iran. This flight was repeated five times until the end of January.
Since the conflict began, it has killed at least 13,000 people, injured over 33,000 others and displaced millions more. After years of relative peace, people are once again being massacred in the southern region of Darfur.
Arming the SAF helps both Iran’s wider geopolitical goals and its competition with regional rivals.
