Do Electronic Devices Really Threaten Our Lives with the Radiation They Emit

The question of whether the radiation emitted by technological devices around us threatens our health has been a topic of debate for a long time. Due to the electromagnetic waves they emit, these devices are associated with many health problems, from headaches to cancer. But is this true? Can cell phones cause cancer? We researched various sources for you!

We live in an age where we are surrounded by countless technological tools, primarily phones. This means that we are enveloped by invisible electromagnetic waves.

For example, a microwave oven heats your food by emitting electronic waves that eliminate the water molecules inside.

And the sun allows us to enjoy a sunbath with the infrared rays it emits. But can the electromagnetic waves emitted by the sun or a microwave oven harm human health?

More frequently discussed examples include base stations and Wi-Fi connections, which are believed to be devices that could be slowly killing us with the electromagnetic waves they emit.

To understand this, it’s worth looking at the electromagnetic spectrum we remember from science classes.

It’s important to note that low-frequency waves do not pose a threat to us. However, high-frequency waves, such as ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays, have the power to change the structure of atoms.

In this spectrum, electromagnetic waves with high frequency, such as ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays, have the power to alter atomic structures.

Therefore, high radiation can cause genetic disorders. This is the reason for the genetic mutations seen in people after an atomic bomb explosion or a nuclear power plant accident.

In science fiction movies, ‘mutants’ often gain superpowers by being exposed to radiation.

Although terrifying scenarios come to mind, low-frequency signals do not cause any visible damage.

So, can we say that devices emitting radiation, such as base stations, phone signals, and wireless connections, which are said to cause diseases from headaches to cancer in our daily lives, are completely harmless?

The World Health Organization classifies radio frequencies as carcinogenic, but it emphasizes that this is based on only a few minor clues and that there is no definitive proof.

Studies refer to health complaints caused by technology as the ‘Nocebo Effect.’ This can be explained as psychologically convincing ourselves that these devices are exhausting us.

For example, when you feel relaxed after going to get a coffee to relieve the fatigue you feel after working on your laptop at work, the strong Wi-Fi connection at the workplace, and the radioactive waves from other computers and phones never actually leave you.

The frequently encountered claim that phones cause brain tumors or other serious diseases has not yet been definitively proven.
