The ‘Talisman Medallion’ Made by Fatih Sultan Mehmet Himself Goes on Sale in London

It was announced that a talismanic medallion dating back to the princedom of Mehmet the Conqueror would be auctioned by the Auction House in England. According to Sözcü, the talismanic medallion found a buyer for 57 million lira.

Bonhams Auction House in England announced that it would sell swords, tiles, edicts and a publication from the Ottoman period.

The most important work of the auction stood out as the medallion with the portrait of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror.

The talismanic medallion with the portrait of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror is exhibited in a separate place from other medallions.

According to the news reported by Sözcü, it is thought that the talismanic medallion was made in Italy during the Renaissance.

The medallion, discovered 20 years ago, is now accepted as the oldest known portrait of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror.

Oliver White, Director of Islamic and Indian Art at Bonhams Auction House, states that the medallion is the oldest portrait of Fatih.

The history of the coin dates back to the 1450s. White explains the history of the coin as follows;

‘On the medallion, Fatih is depicted as ‘Magnus Princep (Great Prince)’. ‘The wording surrounding the medallion tells us that it was made in his youth, because it is not an imperial title.’

“This expression was also used in an agreement between the Ottomans and Venice in the 1440s. That’s why we dated it to 1450.”

The coin’s history before the auction dates back approximately 20 years. The talisman medallion was discovered at a sale in Italy in 2000, and is thought to have previously been in a 19th-century Italian collection.

There is the inscription “Grand Prince, Great Emir, Sultan Mehmet Efendi” around the coin. It is thought that Fatih Sultan Mehmet himself ordered the medallion.

‘It must have been a medallion that he personally ordered, because no one could have one made in his name.’ The bronze medal, which is the oldest portrait of the Conqueror introduced with these words, was sold for 1.4 million pounds (approximately 57 million liras) at auction in London.
