Chinese Researchers Develop AI Tool to Assist Brain Surgeons

Recent advances in artificial intelligence technologies have begun to make an impact in the medical field as well. One noteworthy development in this area comes from China. Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a new artificial intelligence tool to assist doctors in brain surgery applications, based on Meta’s Llama 2.0 AI model. Named “CARES Copilot 1.0,” this new AI tool is designed to provide support to doctors in brain surgery. It will undergo initial testing in seven hospitals in China, with potential nationwide implementation if successful. CARES Copilot 1.0 is built upon a vast database containing over a million medical articles, enabling it to answer questions posed by brain surgeons and analyze various imaging techniques such as MRI, ultrasound, or CT scans. The development of this AI tool utilized approximately 100 GPUs, with a mix of NVIDIA A100 and Huawei Ascend 910B GPUs.
