From the First Satellite to Alper Gezeravcı: Let’s Take a Bird’s Eye View of Humanity’s Significant Steps in Space!
Humanity has achieved significant developments in the space race, starting with the launch of the first satellite. As the idea of establishing colonies on the Moon is debated today, let’s explore the space journey from the past to the present together. 👇
The space race began with the Soviet Union launching “Sputnik 1” into space on October 4, 1957.

In response, the United States launched “Explorer 1” into space on January 31, 1958.

Within the Vostok Program, the Soviet Union pioneered manned space travel, and on April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth aboard the “Vostok 1” spacecraft.

U.S. President Kennedy set the goal of sending humans to the Moon on September 12, 1962, initiating the Gemini and Apollo programs.

Until 1963, the Soviet Union sent 5 cosmonauts into space with Vostok capsules, and among them, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.

The Soviet Union transitioned to larger Voskhod space capsules, and on March 8, 1965, Alexei Leonov made the first spacewalk with “Voskhod 2.”

“Apollo 8” became the first manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon in December 1968.

On July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon with “Apollo 11.”

Following Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the U.S. sent a total of 10 astronauts to the Moon until 1972.

The International Space Station was established in 1998 through the joint efforts of the United States, Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan, and the Canadian Space Agency to maintain a continuous human presence in space and conduct scientific research.

China took a significant step in manned space travel by sending Yang Liwei into space with Shenzhou 5 on October 15, 2003.

NASA concluded publicly funded flight programs in 2011 and began collaborating with the private sector, utilizing SpaceX’s spacecraft.

On January 18, 2024, Alper Gezeravcı became the first Turkish astronaut to travel to space through SpaceX’s Axiom Mission 3 mission.
