The Boy Who Sneakily Entered the Aircraft’s Wheel Bay and Fell to His Death from 60 Meters: Keith Sapsford

On February 22, 1970, Keith Sapsford sealed his own fate by sneakily entering the aircraft’s wheel bay. Coincidentally, there was an amateur photographer present at the time.

Let’s delve into the story together.👇

Let’s introduce you to Keith Sapsford: His story is not only shocking but also encompasses a series of significant coincidences.

But first, let’s take you back to 1965, the year Keith Sapsford was born.

Keith grew up in the Randwick suburbs of Sydney, where his father was a university lecturer in mechanical and industrial engineering. His father always described Keith as a ‘restless child.’

Keith and his family went on an overseas trip due to their son’s restlessness. However, upon returning to Randwick, Keith realized he was still unsettled in Australia.

Keith’s family enrolled him in a Roman Catholic institution in Sydney, thinking it would discipline Keith and contain his ‘restless energy.’

However, things didn’t go as planned. Right after returning to Randwick, Keith headed to Sydney Airport.

Keith had no idea where he was going next when he climbed into the aircraft’s wheel bay. Unaware that this decision would be his last, Keith took the fateful step.

Airport regulations weren’t as strict back then, so Keith easily made his way onto the runway.

Amateur photographer John Gilpin happened to be there, randomly taking photos and coincidentally capturing the unfortunate moment Keith fell from the plane.

The result was this image.👇 (February 22, 1970)

The aircraft Keith sneaked into finally took off. Opening the wheel bay to release the landing gear led to Keith’s death. Falling from a height of 60 meters, Keith lost his life. Fingerprints, footprints, and clothing fibers were found in the aircraft’s wheel bay. Keith was only 14 years old at the time.

This incident remains perplexing. Retired Boeing 777 captain Les Abend commented on this event saying:👇

“People take such steps, risking their lives and limbs. Those who do this are either unaware of the danger or desperate.”
