Turkey has seen significant progress in the field of space exploration in recent years, particularly with the introduction of the National Space Program in 2021.

As part of this program, pilot Alper Gezeravcı was announced as Turkey’s first space traveler last April.

At the TEKNOFEST event, engineer Tuva Cihangir Atasever was also designated as the backup space traveler.

Axiom Space, a U.S.-based space company, provided information about the Ax-3 mission that Gezeravcı is part of.

The company announced that this mission will take place on January 9, 2024, stating that the Ax-3 mission will travel to the International Space Station and mark Axiom Space’s third commercial astronaut mission.

Furthermore, this mission will be recorded as the first entirely European astronaut-led expedition.

Gezeravcı will be part of the Ax-3 crew as a “Mission Specialist,” alongside three others: former NASA astronaut and Spanish-American citizen Michael Lopez-Alegria, Italian officer Walter Villadei, and Swedish European Space Agency project astronaut Marcus Wandt.

Barring any changes, the Ax-3 crew will be launched on January 9 via SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in the U.S. and travel to the International Space Station.

During their 14-day stay at the station, they will perform tasks such as microgravity research, educational support, and commercial activities.
