There isn’t just one breed of black cat. The Cat Fanciers’ Association says there are 22 different breeds of black cats. The black Burmese cat is said to be the most common breed we all encounter. Known as the mini panther, this breed gets its name from its resemblance to the black panther in the wild.

Black cats have plenty of admirers and adopters too! Research shows the opposite of the misconception that black cats are less loved. The ASPCA states that black cats have high adoption and affection rates.

The fur of black cats can rust. There are three different fur genes in black cats: black, brown, and cinnamon. Over time, the color of every black cat’s fur reverts to its original genetic color. Moreover, excessive exposure to sunlight can cause the fur to lighten in color. Black cats that aren’t adequately nourished may also lose their black coat color.

Black fur genes might make cats more resilient against diseases. Scientists found that the mutation causing black fur in cats belongs to the same family of genes that resist HIV in humans. They believe cats’ fur might not be for camouflage but for resilience against diseases. There’s even hope this could lead to finding a cure for HIV.

There’s even a café dedicated to black cats! In Himeji, Japan, there’s a café dedicated to black cats! The owner is black cats. You can adore them, but you’re not allowed to take them home. Each black cat wears a different colored bandana to avoid mixing them up.

It’s tough to photograph black cats, but not impossible. Capturing a photo of black cats in the right light is quite challenging. Most of the time, the result is either too dark or completely indistinct. Therefore, the correct angle, timing, and place are crucial! And lastly: Black panthers have spots too. Technically, there’s no such thing as a black panther. This term is used for all large black cats. These animals are actually leopards or jaguars. The surprising part is, panthers have spots too! Look closely at photos and videos where sunlight hits a black panther’s fur. That’s when you’ll see their spots.
