It all began in Ancient Rome.

It’s not merely an entertaining element; it serves as a tool to stretch the limits of scientific thought and discovery. The earliest reference to time travel is said to have appeared in Ancient Rome, with a man claiming to be from the future.

The first notions of time travel were always about going to the future.


Similar to Rome, ancient texts in India, such as the ‘Mahabharata,’ held beliefs that people, upon sleeping or visiting a deity, made a leap into the future upon regaining consciousness.

The idea of time travel as a two-way street occurred in 1895 with H.G. Wells’ publication of ‘The Time Machine.’


This book popularized the notion of a vehicle that could transport passengers both backward and forward in time. The protagonist travels to the year 802,701 AD, observing the future of the human race and returning to share the tale with dinner guests. A film adaptation was made in 1960 and later in 2002, starring Guy Pearce.

This sparked readers to imagine what it would be like to be a time traveler themselves.

Time travel stories took on further complexity with Robert A. Heinlein’s 1941 short story, ‘By His Bootstraps.’ This narrative showcased a protagonist who, due to time travel, simultaneously existed in multiple time periods, intersecting with different versions of themselves.
