The Reasons Why Turkish People Enjoy Watching Construction Machinery Have Been Revealed

Turkish people, regardless of age or gender, become hypnotized when they see a busy construction site. Watching construction site is even called ‘’National Sport’’. Have you ever wondered why Turkish people enjoy watching machines?

If you were to ask a question like ‘What is one of the favorite activities of the Turkish society?’ you would likely receive the answer ‘watching construction machinery’ from many of them.

Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın offers insights on Turkish people’s enthrallment while watching construction machinery as if they are in a trance.

Taşkın, who mentioned that this pleasure is related to the instincts inherent in people, said, “Humans have had the instinct to control events or other people from ancient times to the present.”

She also added, “One of the situations that holds significant meaning for us is having power and dominance. Alongside our positive impulses, we also possess destructive, demolishing, and controlling instincts. While watching construction machinery, we can unwittingly satisfy these instincts.”

“In the childhood years when the superego develops, the act of babies tearing apart their toys is actually considered an expression of this instinct.”

“These negative impulses can also be released through physical activities. These activities can include dance and sports.”

Highlighting that the habit of watching construction machinery has evolved into a serious phenomenon in all places and conditions, Taşkın stated that this situation has become widespread not only in Turkiye but also in Italy.

This is called ‘Umarell’ in Italian. Umarell are men of retirement age who spend their time watching construction sites, especially roadworks — stereotypically with hands clasped behind their back and offering unwanted advice to the workers. Its literal meaning is “little man”.

Taşkın concluded her remarks with the statement, “In conclusion, watching construction machinery can support us in terms of dopamine release, focus of attention, visual and auditory stimulation, routine and soothing effects, interest, and curiosity.”
